Never look back

As Uncivilize we explore what helps us, and how we can help each other in these times of change, where the old crumbles and the new still needs to arise. How do we find our role in this time of transition?

One thing that happened is that it woke up the historian in me.

What if we could better understand how we arrived at this point? Which significant events, beliefs, and underlying structures led us to the situation we are in now?

What happened to us? How did we end up creating a life, a global society, that ultimately benefits no life on earth? (Not that it is my primary concern, but I do assume that also the 1% that seems to come out ‘on top’ are not truly, deeply happy with their lives. There are extreme differences in wealth and health. Pain is distributed excessively unequal. And also, I believe that in the end, there are no winners here).

What if... we trace back our steps and understand how we got here (in this mess) in the first place?

We achieved a great many things as Homo Sapiens, thanks to our amazing capability to collaborate, and our unique capacity to dream up alternative futures and make them real. (While benefiting from an incredibly stable climate).

But in the process of creating this 'progress,' we lost the connection to ourselves, each other, and the rest of the natural world. And it hurts us, real bad.

And because our problems run so deep through our systems, our lives, and our veins, it will help us to reach all the way back and understand how we ended up living the way we do right now.

To create change, we need to dig deep and face some tough truths about our past and about what led us to this point.

How can we get to the root(s) of the problem and unearth what brought us here, so we can make true, deep changes, instead of quick, superficial fixes?
